Teaching and Learning

Collaborate with colleagues within and beyond the library on planning, delivering, improving, and assessing information literacy initiatives within the context of the larger curriculum the university


Competencies

  • Design and implement strategic and pedagogically appropriate instruction for library users through a variety of methods
  • Actively engage with faculty and academic staff as partners in programmatically integrating information literacy concepts and skills into the curriculum
  • Use program assessment data to plan new areas of instructional initiative
  • Understand basic copyright principles and recognize basic areas of application (e.g., fair use scenarios and face-to-face teaching exceptions)
  • Understand basic principles of instructional design and assessment design appropriate to information literacy instruction
  • Develop and manage physical and/or online learning spaces
  • Identify areas where online learning and digital tools can place the library into the flow of teaching, learning, and scholarship
  • Conduct needs assessment as appropriate and selectively measure instructional outcomes in order to ensure effectiveness of instructional initiatives
  • Assess student learning in library instruction sessions; use results to improve instruction

Best Practices

  • Analyze curriculum within designated departments to help students meet outcomes of information literacy
  • Partner with teaching faculty on timing, purpose, and learning outcomes for information literacy instruction or class assignments
  • Write learning outcomes for information literacy appropriate to student level
  • Use appropriate assessment techniques to gather and analyze information on student learning and information needs in preparing instruction
  • Teach classes effectively using a variety of pedagogies
  • Collaborate with local, state, and national organizations on initiatives to improve information literacy instruction and assessment
  • Work with staff in the Online Learning Office to incorporate new technologies and effective e-learning strategies
  • Perform regular teaching self-assessments and/or peer assessments
  • Examine the schedule of classes each semester; identify core/foundational, research methods, and capstone courses; contact appropriate faculty
  • Create student learning outcomes for library instruction sessions; use easy assessment methods to evaluate student learning; use results to improve instruction
  • Partner with the Center for Teaching and Learning, in particular as it relates to the use of library expertise, resources, or services used to improve or better integrate them into the teaching and learning processes at the university
