Engagement

Serve faculty and students in designated academic departments, taking the initiative to identify, meet, and facilitate ongoing communication about resources and services. Intentionally develop knowledge of interests, activities, and priorities for designated departments and their faculty


Competencies

  • Communicate effectively with members of designated departments, individually or in groups, face-to-face or virtual venues. Actively develop strong working relationships
  • Develop partnerships when appropriate between the library and designated departments related to collections, teaching, research, or other areas of mutual interest
  • Promote library services and collections to meet user needs and expectations
  • Create or improve programs and services in order to respond to identified needs and priorities of students and faculty and to align with the library's strategic framework. To this end, assess user needs, design and implement user studies, and share information about users with library staff and with departments
  • Foster the library's role as an intellectual meeting place for the community (e.g., programming, conversation, and inquiry)
  • Maintain knowledge of the current curriculum and curricular initiatives, in particular as they impact collection development and the information literacy program
  • Participate in departmental, college, and campus committees
  • Attend and present at departmental meetings, seminars, and colloquia

Best Practices

  • Communicate often with faculty, students, academic staff, and administrators in designated departments
  • Participate in departmental meetings and other relevant events such as colloquia, seminar, sabbatical reports
  • Invite faculty to share their scholarship through library-sponsored programs and events
  • Seek professional development opportunities in subject areas
  • Develop studies to assess faculty and student research tools and methodologies and use results to shape collections and services
  • Conduct and attend workshops on innovations(e.g., technological, instructional) that can be used in teaching or research
  • Regularly read professional literature about trends in higher education, subjects, and disciplines, and share information with colleagues
  • Engage with library colleagues to share information about disciplinary trends and department activities
