Silent Study Area

The Upper Level of the Library is designated for silent study.

  • As a courtesy to others, we ask users to limit conversation and silence cell phones while studying on the upper level. If using headphones, sound must be quiet enough not to disturb others.
  • Seating is a mix of task tables, individual study carrels, and soft seating.

The upper floor was changed from the "quiet study floor" to the "silent study floor" based on feedback from a LibQUAL survey. Students felt that "quiet" was not quiet enough, and they valued having a study space on campus dedicated to complete silence. More signage was added throughout the building to indicate appropriate noise levels in each area. Based on comments in 2024's LibQUAL survey and what we've heard from student admissions ambassadors as they lead tour groups, students value this clarity regarding noise levels and "zones" for various types of studying. The  LibQUAL results from 2024 show improvement in the scores for LP-2 - "Quiet space for individual activities."
