About this Guide

This guide supplements the in-class research instruction for the Research Paper assignment in HPE3005 Personal and Community Health.

Recommended Research Strategy

1. Start your research with background reading on your topic.

2. Next, find books and articles related to your topic.

  • Search Library Search for books and e-books
    • Limit to "Books" to find books in print and electronic format
  • Search Article Databases and Library Search for articles
    • Limit to "Peer-Reviewed Journals" to find scholarly articles

3. Format your paper according to APA style.

Choosing a Topic

"A good argumentative topic should prove a point and be helpful within your current or desired profession. Argumentative topics are those that can be looked at in more than one way. You will propose an argumentative thesis and 5-6 supportive findings that are supported by evidence from three or more scholarly articles. These scholarly articles are to be primary research articles discussing a quantitative research project, i.e., "Journal of . . .". Research and reflect upon a topic that is a concern and even a passion for you as a future licensed educator in which you desire to increase your current understanding and respect for both sides of the issue."

"Topic can be related to any of the chapters that we will cover during the Quad, or a topic which addresses personal and community problems in a physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and mental area."

Broad course topics include:

  • Stress Management
  • Psychological Health
  • Physical Activity and Fitness
  • Nutrition
  • Relationships
  • Sexual Health
  • Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs
  • Human Diseases
  • Safety Awareness
