Research Tips

Recommended Resources

Here are a couple resources we recommend for researching the demographics of a country, culture or people group:

  • Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America: Gale Encyclopedia Of Multicultural America contains original essays on specific minority and ethnic groups in the U.S., with an emphasis on culture (religions, holidays, customs, language) in addition to information on historical background and settlement patterns.
  • World Factbook: basic intelligence on the history, people, government, economy, energy, geography, environment, communications, transportation, military, terrorism, and transnational issues for 266 world entities.
  • World Politics Review: World Politics Review publishes in-depth news and expert analysis on current global events to help readers identify and make sense of the events and trends shaping our world.

Library Search strategies

In Library Search, combine the name of a people group or country of origin with keywords by using AND in all caps. For example:

  • Somali Americans AND refugee
  • Chinese Americans AND language
  • Somalia AND culture
  • Central Americans AND refugee
  • Hmong Americans AND Minnesota
