Searching Library Search for Children's Books

The best place to start searching for Children's books is in the Library Collection.

We suggest you start with a Keyword search in Library Search

Using the Location Facet in combination with  a subject or a resource type is very effective.

Adding the word Juvenile to a search term will also bring children's literature to the top.   This is particularly effective when searching beyond our library collections.

** When searching for a particular book, placing the title in quotes can help.

If you are looking for Chapter Books  use the term "chapter book juvenile fiction"  and limit to the level under the Location Facet

Example of location facet

Searching by Genre

Searching by Genre's like historical fiction or fantasy is easiest in the CLCD or in Reference Books, but are useful in Library Search as well

  • In Library Search, using a historical time period like "civil war" can help.
  • a subject related to the genre (like "rockets") is often the best way to find examples.
    • Science Fiction (subjects you might try:  robot, rockets, space, time travel)
    • Fantasy (subjects you might try:  magic, fairy, dream, fantasy)

Finding Poetry and Fairy Tales

Poetry

Poetry is searchable in Library Search by subject or by type of poetry as a key word. (i.e. Haiku)  Use the location facet on the left side to limit to Juvenile Non-Fiction or Early Reader collections.

You can also browse in the Juvenile Non Fiction section in the 811's and the 895's.

Fairy/ Folk Tales

Fairy and Folk Tales are best searched by the name of the tale in quotes. (i.e. "The three little pigs") Some will be in the Juvenile Non-Fiction section in the 398's, and some will be in the Early Reader section.
